Climb Your Family Tree: See Where You Come
From
To find out where your family name comes from, it’s a good idea
to form a family tree. A family tree can be formed by
investigating your family, one generation at a time. It’s best
to start with the people in your family that you know, then
research who their parents were and then, in turn, who their
parents were and so on. This is how to find exactly where your
family comes from, what prominent figures are in your family,
if any, and what has become of your family after all these
years.
Start With You
To make a family tree, start with yourself. If you’re drawing
on a piece of paper, you’ll want to start your tree with your
name at the bottom center of the page. Then, with two branches,
name your parents. Then, form two branches coming from both
your mother and your father. These branches will be their
parents and so on. Soon, you’ll have a tree with many branches.
When you can’t go anymore on first hand knowledge, this is
where it gets truly interesting.
There are some people, when making a family tree, that get so
far back in generations that they soon find that they’ve come
to the end of the road. This can take years of research, a lot
of time and a lot of money. That’s because the information is
out there but often, because of the time that has passed, it
has to be dug up, it has to be paid for and it has to be
researched very slowly.
There are some websites dedicated to family trees. These sites,
for a small fee, allow you to access data bases of past
generations with the hopes that you can trace your own family
tree. These sites also offer resources on making trees and also
let you converse with other family tree makers who might be
able to offer tips on making the best family tree.
Sometimes, when making their family tree, people find out
they’re related to a celebrity, an outlaw or even the
President. This, however rare, makes family tree making worth
it. When making your tree, you may not find any hidden riches
or famous past family members but at least you’ll be able to
experience what your ancestors had to go through to get your
name this far. Chances are, it makes for a great story and
making a family tree is the best way to listen to that story
told from the mouths of your late, great ancestors.
